Twitter Tip: List People
If you haven’t started listing people yet, the time to start is now. Don’t get caught with a thousand followers all jumbled up into one stream. You will miss the tweets you really want to see and you will be annoyed with the ones you do, so start grouping people right away.
As soon as you follow someone, you may want to list them. Let’s say that you like American football. You will want to keep those tweets separate from those of your family’s and your favorite charities’. By listing those you follow, you can watch only the updates you want at the times you wish.

For this example, I am using @ProFootballTalk. Next to the “Follow” button, you will see another button with a little man. Clicking on the little man (or the bald-headed woman) will open a drop-down menu. Choose “Add or remove from lists…” to add @ProFootballTalk to your football list.
I’d like to point out that @ProFootballTalk has over 382,000 followers, yet they are only following 300 people. They obviously do not extend the common courtesy of “following back,” so why would you need to follow them? Well, here’s a little trick. Now that you have them listed, you don’t have to follow them. You will still see their updates in your list feed. When using lists, the only reason to follow someone is out of formality or so that they will be able to send you a DM (direct message). Well, unless you are some famous fancy-pants celebrity, chances are @ProFootballTalk will not be sending you any private messages unless it’s to sell you something or to send you an automated “thank you” for following them. If they really wanted to thank you, they should do it by following back anyway.
Another cool thing about lists is that you can follow someone and not list them. In other words, let’s say you are being followed by an idiot who only wants to sell silly things that you have no interest in buying. As a courtesy, you follow him back but because he is not listed, you don’t have to see his ridiculous tweets. On the other hand, you could start a list and even name it something like “Wonderful People.” You are the only one who knows this is the trash list but people will be pleased that you listed them and they will feel special for being considered “Wonderful People.” Meanwhile, you are only viewing the lists that interest you. (I do not have a trash list. You know you are special if I even list you at all.)
